Reo Arriola, vice principal of Dandan Elementary School, said MathCourt is sponsored by the Public School System and that it is open to all schools.
However, to be able to qualify for the regional competition, students have to win in the MathCourt competitions held all throughout the school year.
The 14 schools that participated in the regional event were Dandan Elementary School, Grace Christian Academy, Oleai Elementary School, Kagman Elementary School, Saipan International School, Green Meadow School, Saipan American Education Foundation, Eucon, Koblerville Elementary School, San Antonio Elementary School, San Vicente Elementary School, Calvary Christian Academy, William S. Reyes Elementary School and Tinian Elementary School.
The winner in the K-5 to 2nd grade division were Fredric Guinto, 2nd grade from CCA, 1st place; Victoria Santos, 2nd grade Eucon, 2nd place; Esperanza Castro, 1st grade WSR, 3rd place; Renee Kiser, K-5 SIS, 4th place; and Cevina Hwang, 1st grade SIS, 5th place.
In the 3rd-5th grade division, the winners were Jae Hyun Kim, 5th grade SIS, 1st place; Peter Park, 5th grade CCA, 2nd; Eric Kiser, 4th grade SIS, 3rd; Daniel Montano, 5th grade WSR, 4th; and Mei Lin, 5th grade WSR – 5th.
Arriola said since 2005, when the competition started, more students have been participating in the competition because a lot of parents are now better informed about it and how it can help their children.
The event is now better organized. “We have a team of organizers. It’s getting bigger and better every year,” Arriola said.
The questions for the competition are based on the standards and benchmarks of PSS.
“We want to spread a lot of math through a healthy competition,” Arriola said.
He added, “The competition will not be possible without the help and support of the teachers/staff, the MathCourt Team CNMI and NHS president Kaelani Demapan and her fellow Saipan Southern High School National Honor Society students for volunteering their Saturday to make this event a smooth and efficient one.”
He also thanked the MathCourt administration for its hard work and dedication for making the annual competitions possible.
