The authors are immigration attorneys Maya B. Kara and Bruce L. Mailman of the Mailman & Kara law firm.
Their weekly column aims to:
• give people affected by the coming federalization sufficient and correct information so that they can make intelligent decisions about their future, and their families’ futures;
• dispel rumors;
• give tools to employers and employees to plan for the coming transition; and,
• respond to questions raised by readers.
Kara served as chief legal counsel to the House of Representatives, as acting attorney general and counsel to the governor and lt. governor.
She also served as a hearing officer of the CNMI Department of Labor and is a former chair of the CNMI’s Law Revision Commission.
Since early 2007, she has been president of the CNMI Bar Association.
She retired from government service in late 2005, and joined her husband at Mailman & Kara LLC.
Mailman has been a practicing lawyer on Saipan since 1989 and is a member of the CNMI’s Law Revision Commission.
He has handled U.S. immigration matters since 1989, and is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
