NMC says it will pay utility bills

“The college has been acting responsibly in ensuring that our electricity bills are paid,” interim NMC President Lorraine T. Cabrera said.

NMC was identified as one of the three biggest customers that owed the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.  millions of dollars in unpaid bills.

CUC said the Public School System had an overdue account of $3.251 million; followed by the central government, $1.361 million; and NMC, $498,602.

To avoid late payments, NMC is  working with Finance to ensure that the funds are transmitted in a timely manner to CUC, Cabrera said.

They are already in the process of transmitting payments for August and September 2009, she said, adding that this will significantly decrease the amount NMC owes to CUC.

NMC’s utilities are paid through an appropriation from the Legislature, she added.

“Utility payments for the college are paid directly from  Finance to CUC,” she said.

Cabrera said the college is also working with CUC to clarify the accuracy of all billings.

“We will continue to work with Finance and CUC  to resolve, in the soonest possible time, the college’s outstanding charges,” she added.

According to Cabrera, the college is aware of the need to conserve electricity and water in order to reduce operational costs.

“We will continue to step up our efforts to minimize our electricity and water use and to conserve energy where we can,” she said.
