International students had already been enrolled in the ELI but they did so by also enrolling in a separate degree program like business management or nursing to take English courses.
With this certification, international students now have the option of taking only English courses in the standalone ELI Program.
Granting the certification is the Student Exchange Visitor Program, under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
The program uses a web-based database, the Student Exchange Visitor Information System, to gather, monitor, and access information on foreign students participating in exchange or educational programs in the U.S. and its territories.
The English Language Institute, under the Language and Humanities Department, offers English courses in Writing, Reading, and Speaking and Listening development by utilizing the newest building on campus, Building M.
The building features a state-of-the-art language lab, equipped with computers and software, with which students may practice the English skills they learn in the program. The equipment, along with the furniture, was financed by the NMC Foundation.
“This is an important milestone for the college’s English Language Institute,” said Language and Humanities Department Chairman Jim Kline. “SEVP recognizes that many international students in the region are interested in studying English and NMC is one of the best places to do so.”
