Aside from Rep. Justo S. Quitugua who is running for senator, Democratic Party board member Henry A. Torres wants to run for the House in Precinct 2, while former Rep. Antonio M. Camacho will run for Saipan mayor.
Party secretary Meling Chargualaf, in an interview, said they may not have a gubernatorial candidate this year but that does not mean that the party is “gone.”
She said the party’s board is still functioning and ready to endorse whoever it finds qualified to run for office in November.
Chargualaf said they will endorse Quitugua, Torres and Camacho as soon as they submit their letters of intent. The board she said will meet on Friday.
Aside from Chargualaf and Torres, the other Democratic Party officials who are still active are its credentials committee chairman Nobert Mendiola and board members William Borja, Pete Arriola and Juanita Camacho.
Former Rep. Manny Sablan stepped down as the party leader, but said he will continue to be involved in the party.
He said he plans to meet with the board this week to discuss the endorsement of Democratic candidates.
Other Democratic leaders and members, particularly on Rota, have reiterated their traditional role as the “party of the poor.”
