NMI masons to observe Philippine Independence Day

Worshipful Master VW Eli Buenaventura said their group will hold a flag-raising ceremony at the Coral Ocean Point at 9 a.m., which is 7 a.m. in Manila when Philippine government officials will also raise the national flag.

“We want to honor our ancestors for their heroic act in fighting for independence,” he said.

Philippine Consulate General Medardo G. Macaraig will lead the flag-raising ceremony.

District Grand Lecturer VW Isagani Benoza will lead the pledge of allegiance to the Republic of the Philippines.

VW Gener Garcia, the district deputy grand master, will read the message of MW Avelino I. Razon Jr., the 93rd grand master of masons in the jurisdiction of the Philippines.

Macaraig is also expected to deliver his message.

Buenaventura said  they used to have 40 members in Saipan, comprising of Filipino and American citizens, but their number is now down to 16.

Their group, he said, was first established in 1993 on Saipan by military personnel from Marshall Islands.

Emon Lodge No. 179 on Saipan is under the jurisdiction of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of the Philippines, he said.

According to Buenaventura,  most of the national heroes who fought for the independence of the Philippines were masons.

After their flag-raising ceremony, the masons will hold a tree planting activity.

The group is also scheduled to raise funds for the purchase of wheelchairs needed by children with disabilities.
