FROM fiscal years 1993 to 2002, the CNMI received $256 million for local capital improvement projects. This amount included the matching funds provided by the commonwealth.
The administration’s special assistant for CIPs, Chuck Jordan, said not all of these federal funds had been expended for “various reasons.”
He said the figure did not include other federal grants the commonwealth received over the years.
Of the $256 million in CIP funds, only $1.7 million has not been appropriated, Jordan said. This amount is earmarked for Saipan, he added.
To hasten the construction of these projects, Jordan said there is a need to shorten the process of the A&E design selection and the contracting procedures.
There is also a need to speed up the bidding process, he added.
