NMTI board approves reopening of trade school on Jan. 4

Board chairman John Gonzales said they approved NMTI Chief Executive Officer Agnes M. McPhetres’ proposal to resume classes in phases.

He said the first phase is the resumption of classes that were suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

For the second phase, Gonzales said  NMTI will determine if there is a need to conduct additional classes.

The third phase is the opening of classes for Public School System students.

Gonzales said NMTI is continuing its partnership with PSS students by providing them trades classes as they complete their academic requirements.

“All of these classes are contingent upon availability of CW funding for [fiscal year] 2021,” Gonzales said.

NMTI officials, he added,  met with CNMI Department of Labor Secretary Vicky I. Benavente on Thursday morning to discuss available CW funds.

“We are looking forward to a promising and encouraging statement from the Labor secretary in allocating  funding from the first quarter of FY 2021 up to the third quarter in anticipation of the resumption of classes,” Gonzales said.

He also thanked Gov. Ralph DLG Torres and the Legislature for  continuously supporting NMTI.
