Northern Islands resident supports resettlement, redevelopment plan

“I like to go back with my family,” he said, as he expressed strong support for the plan to resettle and redevelop the remote islands.

Romolor, recalling his childhood days, said he was an alumnus of Agrigan Elementary School.

Now a cultural performer at one of the hotels on Saipan, Romolor said he sees no reason why people in the Northern Islands will not go back to their home islands.

He is hoping the upcoming resettlement and redevelopment summit will push through so that plans will be laid out.

“That would help generate revenue,” he said, referring to the plan to make the islands a new tourism hub in the CNMI.

“I don’t see why tourism will not prosper in the area,” he said, adding that the Northern Islands are “more beautiful than Jurassic Park.”

Development planners led by Northern Islands Mayor Tobias Aldan have already received proposals from Pacific Development Inc., Arctic Circle Air, IP&E Shell, One Economy Corp., and various private groups, including the tourism consultants of the Marianas Visitors Authority.

Romolor said the only impediment that may discourage investors is the presence of active volcanoes in the Northern Islands.

But he believes that cultivate sugarcane farming will prosper because “the soil there is very good.”

“The islands are excellent for fishing and planting,” he added.
