Northern Islands website to be linked to MVA’s

Former Rep. William S. Torres, consultant of the upcoming 1st Northern Marianas Development Summit, said he got an assurance from MVA’s tourism consultant Manuel L. Knight, who is currently working on MVA’s master plan.

The Northern Islands’ website is www.cnminorthernislands.com. MVA’s can be found on http://www.mymarianas.com.

“This will help educate people about our islands up north,” Torres said, referring to the link.

Torres and former Northern Islands Mayor Joseph T. Ogumoro established the website to help assist former residents who want to return to the CNMI’s “northern frontier,” some of whose islands are active volcanoes.

He said the Northern Islands website is being improved to showcase their potential for development and resettlement.

The website provides information about fish and wildlife and includes photos, scientific studies and information about the islands’ resources.

Torres said the “unique attractions” of each island are highlighted. Anatahan, he noted, has bubbling mud pits, wild goats and caves.

Sarigan’s tip is often in the clouds and the island has coconut trees were planted by former residents as part of a successful copra industry, Torres added.

Pagan, for its part, has  potential for high-end eco-tourism, he said.

The island, he added, has pristine black sand beaches.

“In Banadero Bay you’ll see tropical fish and octopus. Cows and pigs grow as big as they can on Pagan before they die. They have no natural enemies here,” the website stated..

“The active volcano stands majestically. Flying over the mouth of the volcano is like looking into Hell, and is one of the most exciting experiences you can imagine. The bottom is perhaps a thousand feet deep,” it added.
