Number of PSS students down by 1,000

Acting Education Commissioner Charlie Kenty said they have new students who transferred from  private schools and expect to register more enrollees in the coming days.

Based on the preliminary data recorded by the school system’s curriculum instruction office, as of Sept. 26, the 20 public schools on Saipan, Rota and Tinian had 9,891 students compared to last year’s 11,000.

Of this figure, 5,145 are male students while 4,746 are females.

This year, the ninth grade has the most number of enrollees with 1,058; followed by fifth grade, 838;  10th grade, 835; and third grade, 831.

There are 537 kindergarten students, 788 first graders, 768 second graders, 747 fourth graders, 795 sixth graders, 745 seventh graders, 809 eighth graders, 607 eleventh graders and 533 twelfth graders.

Kenty said schools are given until Friday to submit their final enrollment data to PSS.

 The figures will be used in determining each school’s staffing patterns and funding allocations.

Under the fiscal year 2009 budget bill pending in the House, PSS will receive $38 million, the bulk of which will pay for personnel salaries.

Initial enrollment record revealed that Marianas High School had 1,183 students as of Sept. 26; Kagman High School, 744; Saipan Southern High, 751; Tinian Jr./Sr. High, 300; and Rota High School, 160.

Hopwood’s enrollment reached 1,038, Chacha Oceanview had 447 students, while Rota Junior High recorded 122.

Garapan Elementary School had 777 students; San Vicente, 695; William S. Reyes, 690; Kagman Elementary, 626; Oleai Elementary, 510; Koblerville, 353; Dandan, 323; San Antonio, 264; Tinian Elementary, 279; Gregorio T. Camacho, 218;  Rota’s Sinapalo, 216; and Tanapag, 195.
