Only a few registered for pesticide amnesty

Most of those who registered, according to DEQ spokeswoman Reina Camacho, work for resorts and pest control businesses.

The primary target of the amnesty program for pesticides are those used by the farmers, she added.

The goal of the project, she said, is to enable farmers to legally dispose of pesticides that are unregistered, old, cancelled and unlabeled.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s “superfund” and pesticide programs are spending approximately $250,000 for this one-time collection of unregistered substance on Saipan, Rota and Tinian.

Camacho said a lot of resources have been allocated to planning and events.

As the collection time draws near, it is imperative that all farmers know about the opportunity to dispose of pesticides, she added.

DEQ, she said, is asking farmers, hotels and golf courses to participate in the pesticide amnesty.

The schedule of collection will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 16 at the Kagman Agricultural Station and at the Koblerville Fire Station.

On Rota, the collection will be held on July 17 at the Sunset Villa property from  8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Tinian, it will be held on July 18, at the Department of Public Works fenced area, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
