Organizers: Valentine Walk strengthens male involvement in community

The event was part of the month-long Fatherhood and Male Involvement celebration, according to Gene Weaver, Head Start Policy Council vice chairman.

“We had a great turnout,” Weaver said, adding that organizers were considering doing it again next year.

He said they were not expecting the large number of people that supported the event.

The organizers, Weaver said, were also impressed by the strong message of Judge Kenneth Govendo, one of the participants.

The judge spoke about the importance of the father’s influence in a family.

Govendo noted that most of the domestic cases in court indicated the irresponsibility on the part of the fathers.

The Valentine Walk started at 4 p.m. from the Garapan Fishing Base to the National Office Supply and back to the staring point.

The participants used the pathway along Beach Road and the personnel of Department of Public Safety and the Emergency Medical Services monitored the event.

The event, dubbed as “The Men’s Project — Stepping Up to The Plate,” drew the participation of Head Start personnel and families from Tanapag, Garapan, Kagman, Dandan, Oleai, San Antonio and Chalan Kanoa and other members of the community.

Participants were encouraged to join the Family for the Environment program, a beach cleanup activity at Micro Beach which will start at 9 a.m.. on Feb. 21.

On Feb. 26, fathers and other males will to read with their children in every Head Start classroom from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m.
