Over 100 kids to join summer camps, registration still open

Division of Youth Services coordinator Vivian Sablan told the Variety yesterday that over 50 have registered for the summer youth camp in Kagman which will be held from July 26 to Aug. 7.

Over 50 registered for the summer camp at the Ada Gymnasium which was originally scheduled to start on Aug. 2 but has been moved to Aug. 9 and will end on the 21st.

Sablan said for the first week of the summer camp, participants will be involved in sports. During the second week, they will concentrate on arts and crafts and learn about paper weaving, coconut weaving, banana painting, flower making and dancing.

The youth summer camp at the Ada Gym will include swimming and canoeing activities which will not be available in the Kagman camp.

For the rest of the camp period, participants will go on field trips to  Northern Marianas College-Cooperative Research Extension and Education Service and the Commonwealth Ports Authority.

On July 30, Sablan said  personnel from government agencies will do presentations and demonstrations on the Department of Public Safety’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education, fire prevention, anti-domestic violence programs as well as the brown tree snake program and Customs’ K-9.

Sablan said on the last day of both summer camps which falls on Saturday, the participants will be given t-shirts and certificates.

“The last day will be a fun day for the camp participants so we are inviting their families to join us for games and entertainment,” Sablan said.

The activities in both summer camp venues start at 8 a.m. and end at 11:30 a.m. everyday. A $5 insurance coverage per participant per camp is required.

The youth summer camp is part of the celebration of June to August as the Youth Leadership Months in the CNMI.

To register, pick up and fill out registration forms at the Tanapag Youth Center, the DYS main office, the Arts Council, or the Ada Gymnasium or contact Sablan at 664-2550 or 322-4673 for more information.
