Pacific nurses group elects new officers

Patricia Maech was elected president; Rensely Alik, vice president; and Maria Salomon, treasurer.

Maech, in an interview, said becoming the group’s new president is “exciting, yet kind of scary.”

She believes that everybody will work together for the improvement of nursing in the region and the promotion of health for everybody.

She plans to hold more education and training sessions for the council’s members.

Outgoing vice president Lee Q. Castro said Maech came up with a lot of recommendations that benefited their organization.

He expects Maech to lead the organization in the next two years and implement programs that will promote their profession in the region.

The council on Friday adopted the following resolutions:

 • To continue to be an active participant in the World Health Organization’s Western Pacific Regional Office for the Asia-Pacific emergency disaster nursing network;

• To support the WHO-WPRO initiative for mapping the nursing and midwifery workforce across the Western Pacific Region;

• To support the WHO-WPRO program that aims to improve the healthcare workforce capacity for inter-disciplinary quality assurance; and

• To incorporate mental health component to disaster and emergency response and plan in all Pacific jurisdictions.
