PDM Promoters collect over 600 lbs of trash in Garapan

Sonia Siwa of  PDM Promoters said those who joined the monthly cleanup included members of the Saipan Awaodori team, some parents, PDM Promoters volunteers and Kinpachi Restaurant staffers.

Siwa said the Division of Environmental Quality supplied the group with trash bags and gloves while D&Q provided  refreshments.

“The monthly cleanup is our continuing efforts to teach kids like the Saipan Awaodori Team members, and adults too about the value of community service, a clean environment and responsible citizenship,” Siwa said.

The team started picking up trash from the road beside Winchell’s and worked their way toward Coral Tree Avenue, around Paseo de Marianas, toward the fire station, ending in front of American Memorial Park.

Last month, PDM Promoters Inc. volunteers collected 580 pounds of trash from the same area.

Over the past year, Siwa said the group has collected thousands of pounds of garbage every first or second Saturday of the month. Trash collections included cigarette butts, discarded tires, cans and bottles and other refuse.

Siwa said they are urging the community and everyone who is interested to help clean the environment to come and join them every cleanup day.

She said some Japanese tourists also help in the cleanup every now and then.

Siwa said they cannot stress enough the importance of keeping the island clean, especially the tourist district, because this is one way of enticing more tourists to visit Saipan.
