Business operators who declined to be named told the Variety that they were shocked to see such careless behavior at a site that can be considered as the heart of the tourist district in Garapan.
“We are very concerned about this because this is a very unpleasant sight especially for tourists,” the business owners said.
They believe that the trash was dumped by some establishments in the area.
“We cannot pinpoint who have been dumping their trash here, and it is not the first time but whoever is doing this, we hope they will realize that they are not contributing to the ailing economy,” the business owners said.
They have already reported the incident to the Division of Parks and Recreation.
They said the tourism industry had been doing what it can to promote the CNMI to the world but showcasing trash at the tourist district will not help.
“We want to appeal to the community to please help us make the Paseo de Marianas and the whole island a clean place to entice more tourists to come here,” the business operators said.
