Speaker questions Perez’s nomination

Although Perez was not present during the Senate session yesterday, Sen. Ralph DLG. Torres, R-Saipan, raised the issue regarding the increasing utilities rate.

He would like Perez to try to “minimize” the  utility cost. Torres did not say how.

Senate President Paul A. Manglona, Ind.-Rota, urged his colleagues to move on with the confirmation, stressing the need to complete the CPUC board.

Right now, he said ,only Viola Alepuyo sits on the board.

“I hope we can entertain this now. Otherwise we have to ask the administration to submit new names,” Manglona said noting that the 90-day period for them confirm Perez’s nomination would end yesterday.

But Speaker Eli D. Cabrera, R-Saipan, said Perez has  a lot of clarifications to make before the House confirms his nomination.

The speaker said he had a hard time figuring out how the nominee managed to be employed for different positions during the same period of time.

From Sept. 1980 to July 1994, for example, Perez’s résumé indicated he was co-manager of BI Auto Repair Shop on Saipan. From July 1980 to Sept. 1994 Perez was vice president for sales and marketing of Pacific Island Aviation Inc. when he was  a board member, director of safety and Saipan station manager.

What puzzles Cabrera the most is that Perez became the vice president and chief operations officer of Alliance Airlines from Feb. 1991 to Jan. 1993 while being the owner of BI Equity Investment on Saipan.

From July 1989 to Jan. 1991, Perez was also vice president and general manager of Guam Air Terminal Services and associate agent of Century 21 Abetter Realty in Sacramento, California at the time.
