Sen. Ralph DLG. Torres, R-Saipan, and chairman of the Senate Committee on Health and Welfare, sponsored Senate Bills 17-10 and 17-11.
The Cancer Registry Act, or S.B. 17-10, will establish a population-based cancer registry for the CNMI while the Medical Consent Act, or S.B. 17-11, proposes to recognize the right of adult persons to make decisions regarding the rendering of their own healthcare, including end-of-life decisions to accept or refuse care in the event of terminal or permanent unconscious condition.
Torres said the bills have gone through extensive public scrutiny and consultation with stakeholders, and the comments received have been overwhelmingly supportive.
The bills are now with the House Health and Welfare Committee which Rep. Sylvestre Iguel, Covenant-Saipan, chairs.
