Rep. Babauta pulls out of House race

But during the party’s Precinct Club 2 meeting last week, he told his supporters that he had decided to withdraw his candidacy.

He said he is “temporarily” retiring from politics.

He has endorsed Ralph Sablan Demapan to be the running mate of  Covenant Rep. Raymond Palacios who is seeking reelection this year.

During the meeting, Babauta shed tears as he expressed his gratitude to every one who stood behind him.

Most of his supporters, Babauta said, were surprised by his decision.

“But I explained to them that the time has come for me to step aside and give others the chance to participate in this  coming election,” he said.

Babauta assured them that  he will continue serving the people.

Tough decision

Running for re-election was a difficult decision to make, but Babauta said backing out was a tougher call.

“This is due to the urging of my family that I decided to give in to their request and take a break,” he added.

The family matter is something that he has to attend to seriously, he said.

He declined to elaborate.

Babauta said before he announced his decision, he met with Gov. Benigno R.  Fitial and his running mate, Finance Secretary Eloy S Inos.

The three, all former Republicans, are the founding members of the Covenant Party.

Taking over

Demapan is very new in politics, but Babauta said he is confident that his replacement will carry many of the plans he has for the CNMI especially for his Precinct 2 constituents.

He said he recommended Demapan to Covenant Precinct Club 2 chairman Jack Aguon and the rest of the club members.

He said he is convinced that Demapan has leadership qualities.

“Demapan may be new in politics but he has charisma,” Babauta added.

Gratitude

Babauta said he wants to extend his deepest gratitude to the people of Precinct 2 and those who have given him encouragement and guidance as lawmaker.

Babauta started his political career in the 1993 elections, running with then-Vice Speaker Diego T. Benavente who later became speaker and lt. governor.

Babauta served as speaker from 2006 to 2008.
