Yesterday, acting CPA Executive Director Ed Mendiola supervised the installation and testing of the generators at the airport site.
“We received them over a week ago…if the test goes well today both units will be fully operational before the new year,” Mendiola told Variety yesterday.
He said previous tests indicated a minor problem but this was immediately fixed by the contractor, Seafix Inc.
The repairs cost approximately more than $200,000 and were funded by federal grants.
Before the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. installed the Aggreko generators in September, CPA’s failure to provide enough backup power supply at the airport posed a great risk to airlines and passengers during the frequent power outages on island.
Now, Mendiola said, “when CUC power goes off these units will kick in. We will have a reliable backup power at the airport whatever happens to CUC and Aggreko.”
CPA also bought a third backup generator funded again by the federal government.
This generator is expected to be delivered in early 2010.
The project will cost $6.8 million, according to CPA, which awarded the contract to GPPC.
