The meeting has been scheduled for today in the House chamber, according to a memorandum from Saipan Republicans Senate President Pete P. Reyes and Speaker Arnold I. Palacios.
Sablan will discuss federal issues affecting the CNMI.
Sen. Paul A. Manglona, R-Rota, yesterday lauded Sablan for requesting for the meeting.
“I think a major part of our economic recovery lies in the hard work and energy of our new congressman,” Manglona told Variety.
Sablan is expected to join the caucus of the Democrats, the majority party in both houses of the U.S. Congress.
“He will be leaving soon for D.C. and he wants to confer with the Legislature on how he can best represent the CNMI,” Manglona said. “One major issue, I believe, is our continuous appeal to allow the Russian and Chinese tourists to continue coming into our islands” through the U.S. visa waiver program.
Sablan is also expected to discuss the impending federalization of local immigration as well as the CNMI’s Compact-Impact funds.
“We’re expecting Congressman Sablan to do his best to tap more federal assistance for the CNMI,” Manglona said.
