Retirees to conduct online poll on pension bills

CRA chairman Juan M. Sablan yesterday said their board, with  the help of Internet experts and some retirees, is now working on an electronic poll system for their registered members.

Noting that the pension and retirement bills are “moving too fast” in the Legislature, Sablan said all retirees should air their concerns.

‘We did not have enough public hearings so we need to send our comments to lawmakers,” he added.

According to Sablan, CRA is doing all it can to reach out to its over 3,000 members.

Hopefully, he said they will complete the online poll as soon as possible.

He said board member Oscar C. Camacho is now working on the issues and questions that will be posted on the website.

Yesterday, two more pieces of retirement legislation, H.B. 17-98 and H.B. 17-99, were introduced by House Floor Leader George N. Camacho, Ind.-Saipan.

H.B. 17-98 will “stop the accrual of retirement or disability benefits beyond an annuity of $75,000 for any member.”

H.B. 17-99 will provide for “an actuarially determined amount necessary for the…Retirement Fund to be annually appropriated.”

The House recently passed H.B. 17-77 to provide the same life insurance coverage for retirees and active government employees.

The other pending bills are S.B. 17-27 to allow early retirement for government employees, and S.B. 17-29  to allow the payment of early retirement contributions.

The Commonwealth Retirement Association will hold a general membership meeting on Sept. 23 to get its members’ position on these  bills.
