Saipan mayor defends zoning law

Saipan Mayor Donald P. Flores made the statement to the Saipan legislative delegation in relation to House Local Bill 17-1, which seeks to suspend the zoning law for at least six months.

“I believe the most and only sensible approach for the Commonwealth Zoning Board to deal with the alleged unintended consequences of the law is to allow the review process [to continue] while the law remains intact and valid,” wrote Flores to the delegation.

He said suspending the law will disregard the efforts already made to comply with it.

“Suspension of the law would expose Saipan to a potential repeat of the various negative reasons why the Saipan Zoning Law of 2008 was enacted in the first place, which was to control and regulate land use and development,” the mayor said.

“Unsightly scenic drives and unsafe main thoroughfares would become a bigger mess for the government to deal with through the office of the Commonwealth Zoning Board. The [delegation] must act responsibly and not let this happen,” he added.
