Navarrete told the Variety that he can’t wait to see everybody on Saturday night.
“It’ll be an awesome night for me and you all,” he said.
Navarrete performs impromptu.
“I don’t even know what’s coming out of my brain that night. I’m sure we’ll all have a great time together.
There’s so much to cover,” he said.
Navarrete said the fact that he grew up in a rural setting makes it easy for him to relate to life in the islands like Saipan.
“I think that we all come from a common islander upbringing. I was born in the Philippines and was raised in the rural province. There are things islander kids can relate to,” he said.
In these times of global depression, Navarrete said the need to laugh is so important.
“If the laughing stops, then things get really bad,” he said.
Navarrete shares with Variety a secret routine which he does before going on stage to entertain people.
“I tend to pace around a lot and go over the show in my head. It’s a real personal thing trying to connect for an hour with a couple hundred folks,” he said.
Asked if he has thoughts of shifting to another career, or where he would have been if he is not entertaining people, Navarrete said he is not sure.
“I’ve put everything I have into comedy now. It’s my full-time occupation and I am lucky enough to support a family on it,” he added.
Navarrete graduated from San Francisco State University, majoring in film and Asian American studies. He then attended the University of California, Berkeley where he received a master’s degree in public health and public policy.
This is Navarrete’s second time to be on Saipan. He was here in 2005.
To date, Navarrete has three CDs — “Badly Browned,” “Husky Boy” and “Bastos” that have all become bestsellers.
He also has three DVDs: “Hella Pinoy,” “Bad-ass Madapaka,” and “Komik Organik: The Comedy of Rex Navarrete.”
Navarrete started his career as a 19 year-old when he entertained a crowd of 800 at the annual Asian Pacific Islander Student Union conference at University of California Santa Cruz.
“The Comedy of Rex Navarrete Live in Saipan” is produced by Metro Pacific Productions which is owned and managed by Jerome Susim, Lloyd Baker and Chris Reyes.
