Reyes won’t seek another term as Humanities Council chairman

The current chairman, Charles P. Reyes Jr., said he will not seek another term.

“As much as I enjoy my work with the humanities, I find myself very busy at work and I also have other interests, plans, and goals to pursue,” he said.

Reyes said there are other qualified board members who could be an  “excellent chairperson.”

But one of them, attorney Janet H. King, is not interested.

“I am a practicing attorney with my own law office, and I’m also the [Northern Marianas College board] chair.”

The other board members are vice chair Lillian A. Tenorio, William R. Barrineau, Maria Lourdes S. Ada, Joann T. Aquino, Marla M. Barcinas, Rep. Fredrick P. Deleon Guerrero, Dr. Peter  Eche, Tracy M. Guerrero, Richard D. Moreno, Rep. Felicidad  T. Ogumoro, and former Rep. Alvaro A. Santos.

During his term, Reyes said the board was able to provide benefits to employees, including a retirement plan, for the first time.

He said they also hired a full staff of highly qualified individuals.

“We succeeded in securing more grants and more community contributions for valuable humanities-related programs of interest to many in our community — programs that were well attended and well received, involving history, culture, literature, art, poetry, and student forensic competitions,” he said.

Reyes said he was impressed with the outstanding and highly talented CNMI students who participated in their various programs, including mock trial competitions, poetry composition and recitals, book discussions, and writer workshops.

“We recently funded a Tinian grant application involving students, literacy, and cross cultural exchanges,” he said.

For Rota, he said they are supporting an important Chamorro language conference this month.

They also approved a grant application for Rota.

Reyes said  the council aims to keep growing and to constantly offer community programs that are interesting and meaningful to the public.
