Roadside vendor choked, pick-up truck burned

They have asked Department of Public Safety Commissioner Ramon C. Mafnas for a more detailed information regarding any ongoing investigation.

The victim and the employer are also seeking a temporary restraining order from the Superior Court to help protect the victim.

“We will also seek further legal action against the criminals. From my understanding, [the Department of] Corrections is still holding one of the men. It has been over two weeks now but DPS has so far not released information to the victim … and his  employer,” their letter to Mafnas stated.

The victim and the employer said the case involved charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, personal injuries/attempted murder, vehicle theft, robbery, destruction and loss of personal properties, loss of income and harassment.

DPS had yet to respond to the inquiries of this reporter.

The employer said the matter has not been referred to the Attorney General’s Office.

Yesterday, this reporter went to an open boonie area on Adobo Drive in Koblerville, where the victim’s burned pick-up was left by the perpetrators.

The victim and the employer noted that the vehicle was not towed and preserved as evidence.

Individuals were earlier seen carrying scrap metals taken from the vehicle.

The victim said two male individuals approached him in the afternoon of July 7.

The first man choked him while the second drove the victim’s pick-up truck.

A witness told this reporter that she saw the truck in flames.

“They were having a good time. They were very noisy,” the witness told this reporter, referring to three male individuals who were moving away from the vehicle.

Prior to the incident, the victim said he was selling vegetables loaded at the back of his pick-up truck at about 4 p.m. at his regular spot in San Antonio, across from the former UIC garment factory.

The victim said two locals later approached him.

The smaller and skinny local wanted to buy four cucumbers for $2.

The victim said they had to weigh the cucumbers first to get the price.

“The men were drunk as I could smell the strong alcohol odor from their breath and they were not walking very straight,” the victim said.

Suddenly, he added, the skinny local jumped behind him and choked him with a string.

The other local, described as  fat and taller,  jumped inside the victim’s truck, started it and then started driving it back and forth on the side of the road.

Both men looked like they were in their early 20s, the victim said.

Both men had black hair and the fat  individual was about 5’11” tall, the victim said.

The victim said the fat man then drove the truck southbound, turned right and proceeded to  San Antonio Elementary School, not far from its main gate.

The victim said he followed them on foot to see where they were going.

He said the suspects threw out the vegetables from the back of the truck.

The victim called police at around 5:20 p.m. with the help of a witness.

While Police Officer Tarimai Yangetmai was interviewing him, the victim said he was informed that a burning pick-up truck  was seen in Koblerville.

“We drove slowly by my burning truck that was still on fire. After two or three minutes, we then went to a location where another police officer held one of the men that had stolen and burned my truck. I positively identified the person held by the police as the person that choked me and stole my truck,” the victim said.

Since then, he and his employer have not been informed about the status of the case.
