Rota council ‘conditionally’ confirms cockfight board nominees

On Wednesday last week, the Rota  council headed by George O. Hocog confirmed the five nominees of Mayor Melchor A. Mendiola to the board.

The hearing and confirmation was conducted at the Rota Courthouse at 6 p.m., Hocog said.

He said the council gave Brian Richard, Danny T. Kent, Gavin Mendiola, Mark Hocog and Mark Manglona a “conditional confirmation.”

They were nominated in October but they have yet to submit  their  drug test results.

“We want to strictly impose the law against illegal cockfights on the island,” George Hocog said.

Illegal cockfights on Rota are  conducted usually during birthdays and other special family events, he added.

Kent, in a separate interview, said once their nominations are made official, the board will  look for a location for the cockfight arena.

He said he was “so thankful” to the mayor for having confidence in him.

The board, he said, will ensure that cockfights will be professionally and legally conducted on Rota.

Based on the amended cockfight regulations, George Hocog said, a cockfight operator will be given a three-year contract.
