Rota’s mayor supports establishment of vocational trade school

Mendiola’s administration is giving priority to this and other development endeavors, according to Tommy Mendiola, the mayor’s adviser.

“The people are our resources,” the mayor said.

The development of local manpower on Rota is timely with the federalization of the CNMI’s immigration law, Tommy Mendiola said.

After Nov. 2011, most nonresident workers are expected to leave the islands due to the full implementation of U.S. immigration law, which is more restrictive than local law.

Tommy Mendiola said Rota officials  had initial discussions with Northern Marianas Trades Institute president Tony Pellegrino.

“We are still on the planning stage,” Tommy Mendiola told Variety.

He said the Rota trade school will cater not only to the youth but also to  adults.

Pellegrino’s participation in the program is very vital to its success, Tommy Mendiola added.

Northern Marianas College’s campus on Rota may be the site of the trade school, he said.
