Rep. Tina Sablan, Ind.-Saipan and chairwoman of the Public Utilities and Infrastructure Committee of the delegation, said they will be gathering information and documents over the next few weeks relevant to the probe.
Sen. Frica Pangelinan, D-Saipan, Rep. Ed Salas, R-Saipan, and Rep. Frank Dela Cruz, Covenant-Saipan, all members of the committee, supported the move.
Sablan said they have identified key areas of concern on CUC which include consistency between statutes, regulations, and policies pertaining to CUC and actual practices; the financial viability of CUC; actual progress and performance of contractors hired to rehabilitate and repair the engines at CUC; plans for short-term power generation relief and long-term solutions, if any, at CUC; and other areas of concern.
She had asked Rep. Ramon Tebuteb, R-Saipan and chairman of the delegation, to allow the committee to begin the preliminary oversight investigation on CUC.
About 200 residents reeling from the expensive cost of electricity in the CNMI urged their elected leaders to do something about the power crisis on Saipan during a public forum on June 17.
Unannounced blackouts have been more frequent during recent weeks, interrupting business activities and inconveniencing many residents.
