“It is very important that we help Japan as much as we can in other ways,” Mayor Donald G. Flores said.
In collaboration with the Japan Consulate, the mayor’s office is inviting all students and community members to write “Kibô No Tegami” or “Letters of Hope.”
Flores is asking all school principals to support this effort.
“It is comforting and greatly assuring to see people from all around the world and the CNMI coming together in support of relief efforts for Japan.
Through these relief efforts, I am confident that recovery will be speedier,” he said.
Vinycia Seman, the mayor’s executive secretary, said the letters should express, through words or pictures, hope and support for the families in Japan that have been affected by the disaster.
If the letter is addressed to a particular gender or age group, the writer should indicate the information on the envelope or blank side of the folded letter.
It is optional for students to write their return addresses.
Letter can be dropped off or picked up by the mayor’s office no later than Tuesday, April 12.
Postage is not necessary.
Seman said letters are not limited to students as other community members are also encouraged to join.
Flores said the letters can be addressed “children to children, mothers to mothers, fathers to fathers or families to other families to send the words of hope, love and encouragement.”
“This is one way to amplify the true spirit of our close ties to our Japan families,” he added.
“Let’s reach out and let them know that we, the people of Saipan, have them in our daily thoughts and prayers; that we are sending our love, support and encouragement. Through these difficult times, we pray that they stay strong and rise above the challenges of recovery,” he said.
