Lizama, the first woman to be named manager for the Commonwealth Ports Authority’s Saipan Seaport, which traditionally is male-dominated since its inception 35 years ago, said she knows the value of hard work.
“It’s challenging being in a male-dominated work force,” she said about her job, “But because of my background I appreciate what they do.”
With resources scarce because of the slowdown on cargo traffic following the demise of the Saipan garment industry in 2009, Lizama said their skeletal workforce of 15 has to wear multiple hats.
“I pick up trash or do other work. Our staff have become very flexible. We share responsibilities,” she said.
She began her career in CPA as secretary for the air traffic controller in 1997.
After earning her A.A. at Northern Marianas College, Lizama pursued a bachelor of science degree in business management through the University of Phoenix’s online education program while working with CPA on various administrative capacities.
That exposure eventually led to her permanent assignment as Saipan seaport manager in Oct. 2008.
In 2009, her dedication and hard work paid off when the board of directors named her for three months as acting executive director of CPA, which has jurisdiction over three seaports and airports throughout the CNMI.
Despite her busy schedule, this mother of one continues her quest for higher education, pursuing a master’s in psychology also from the University of Phoenix.
“Do not let anything get in the way in achieving your goals,” Lizama said.
