Scottie Aguon, who is an active member of the SSHS Drama Club and the Manta Ray Band, will be leaving in June to attend the six-week summer program. The program is offered in a residential setting on the beautiful campus of the University of California at Santa Cruz.
Participants of the summer program will be able to experience living in a college environment, immersed in a math and science study program along with students from other schools who have similar goals. In addition, they will enroll in courses which include marine biology, mathematics, written and oral communications, and college orientation and personal development.
Along with the rest of program participants, Aguon will also have the privilege of participating in laboratory and field activities that will focus on note taking skills, quantification, observation, description, graphing, independent and group research, experimental techniques, and oral reporting. Workshops, speeches from guest speakers, counseling, and enrichment activities will be included in the program to help enhance learning.
During his leisure time, Aguon focuses in one of his all-time favorite hobbies — drawing animation sketches.
When asked how he feels about being selected to participate in the 2010 Monterey Peninsula College Math and Science Summer Program, Aguon replied, “I’m excited and eager. Education is more valuable than ever in the job market.”
Aguon is a participant of the Educational Talent Search Program at Northern Marianas College, a federally funded TRIO program, tasked to motivate disadvantaged high school students to pursue a college education. He has been an active member since 2007.
