Saipan Zoo needs local support to survive

“Monthly expenses top $6,000 to feed and care for the 100 animals,” explained owner Frank Aldan.

For Aldan and his animals, the economy decimated the nursery and landscaping business that historically subsidized the zoo and low-cost tickets for island residents.

Opened in 1995 as a result of a donation of a pair of Peacocks from the long-ago Nikko hotel, the zoo slowly built a reputation as a safe and caring home for over 30 animal species.

Today however, the future is very uncertain, especially for the big cats that include a majestic Bengal Tiger, a fascinating and gorgeous spotted leopard and an aged and tired African lion.

“Meat for the cats is very expensive…but what can we do — they must be cared for no matter what,” said Aldan when asked how he coped with so much responsibility and so few resources.

The zoo receives no government or tourism industry subsidies and relies on vacationers, local school trips and the occasional special event that rents the well-maintained grounds.

“We ask for the island’s help to stay open…please visit us during the holidays with the kids and family.”

During Variety’s visit we met a family from Guam on a short holiday break and they had nothing but gushing remarks about the zoo.

“It’s admirable this zoo…so clean and welcoming…we’ve had a great time,” described Thomas Bejado, a famed music and video producer on a three-day mini-vacation with his wife, Deborah and five-year-old son Aaron.

Saipan residents would do well to follow the lead of the Bejado family and support its local zoo by visiting during the holiday break or renting the space for an upcoming event in 2012.

There are plenty of animals, fish and livestock to interest everyone and children can enjoy the petting zoo of fluffy guinea pigs and adorable rabbits.

Hours of operation include 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and ticket prices are $10/adult and $5/children — group discounts are available for large families just call 322-5711 for more information.

Merry Christmas from your local lion, tiger and leopard and remember them too during this season of giving.
