Senate Fiscal Affairs Committee to tackle FY 2010 budget

Sen. Jovita M. Taimanao, Ind.-Rota, will preside over this afternoon’s public meeting set for 1:30 p.m. in the Senate chamber.

Taimanao, who chairs the committee, asked the Fitial administration to provide her office copies of the latest government’s projected revenues.

Her panel will also discuss House Bill 17-22, or the Austerity Holidays and Unpaid Legal Holidays Act of 2010.

This bill, which House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Ramon S. Basa, Covenant-Saipan, sponsored, calls for the closure of government offices every other Friday to save personnel expenses.

It also mandates six unpaid legal holidays in FY 2010: Presidents Day, Good Friday, Commonwealth Covenant Day, Memorial Day, Independence/Liberation Day and Labor Day.

Some exempted or contractual government employees are already experiencing pay cuts.

A legislative mandate, however, is needed to include the civil service employees from pay cut measures.
