Senators undergo drug testing

Senate Rule 19 states that senators and their staff “shall submit to a urine drug test for cocaine, marijuana, opiates, amphetamines, and phencyclidine. Any member who tests positive shall be denied participation during session until he or she as passed the drug test. No employee of a member of the Senate may be assigned to work or renew employment until he or she has passed the drug test. The director of the Legislative Bureau is the administrator for the testing. The cost of drug testing of a member and his or her staff is paid for by the member.”

As of last week, all nine senators had submitted to the drug test.

Arrangements for employee testing have also been made.
