Solomon’s opposition calls for regional mission’s review after crash

The call came after the death of a 26-year-old nurse from Malaita, who was killed at the weekend in a fatal road accident involving a RAMSI vehicle. Local media have alleged the driver was drunk.

Solomon Islands opposition leader Manasseh Sogavare said the RAMSI officer is protected from prosecution because of the provisions of the Facilitation Act.

But deputy special coordinator for RAMSI, Dr. Jonathan Austin, said that was not the case

“Immunity does not mean impunity, the fact that people have immunity does not mean that they will — If they’ve committed a crime — that they will escape any kind of prosecution for that crime,” Austin said “What’s happening here is that there are two investigations are underway, and once we see what the outcomes of those investigations are we can then determine what the next step will be.”

Solomon police are questioning a Samoan police officer working with RAMSI, who was involved in the fatal accident

A second Samoan officer, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was badly injured and was evacuated to Australia for urgent medical treatment.

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Derek Sikua, has received a condolence message from Samoa Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi after the tragic and untimely death of a young nurse, according to Solomon Times online.

“Words are not enough to convey the depth of our regret and sorrow that an officer from Samoa sent to Honiara as part of our contribution to help has instead caused the terrible anguish to your people and government,” the samoan prime minister said in the statement.
