A source who asked not to be named said the individual started playing baccarat in August, had a “stroke of luck” and kept on winning each day.
The individual did not play the game alone.
“At first he was alone but then he started playing with a buddy. Another one joined until there were six of them,” the source said.
The group would win about $50,000 one night and then $100,000 on another evening until their total winnings reached $2 million.
“They stayed at the Dynasty for weeks, sometimes going back to Saipan for a day or two and calling for a limousine to pick them up at the airport,” the source said.
Variety learned that the winner is a Korean taxi driver on Saipan.
He and a female companion tried their luck at the recently held baccarat challenge at Tinian Dynasty but were unsuccessful.
He was eliminated at the semi-finals although his female partner made it to the final table with nine other players. She did not win the major prize.
The story about the $2.5 million winner last September triggered mixed reactions, ranging from disbelief to skepticism.
One Variety online commentator noted that “the Dynasty cannot even pay the salaries of their employees on a regular basis so this is just unbelievable.”
