Soroptimist CNMI’s annual gala spotlights ‘Live Your Dream’ awards

SOROPTIMIST CNMI will host the “Live Your Dream” awards ceremony during their annual gala and silent auction on Feb. 10, Saturday, at the Pacific Islands Club’s Charley’s Cabaret.

The civic organization, which is dedicated to advancing the lives of women and girls through education, will be giving away a total of $3,500 to women who are pursuing academic or trades degrees, said Maureen Sebangiol, Soroptimist CNMI president.

Twenty-three women applied for the funding, but only four will walk away with the prizes.

To qualify for the award, the women have to be students pursuing an undergraduate or trades education; be the financial head of their household; and demonstrate a financial need.

Sebangiol said the women applied online via a questionnaire. Their answers were vetted by local judges.

The cash awards at stake are $1,500 for first prize; $1,000, second prize; and $500 each for the third and fourth prizes.

Sebangiol said in the past, prize winners spent their funds on things that “enabled them to continue their education” such as laptops.

She said the funds that will be raised at the gala will also support their other philanthropic endeavors, which include care packages for mothers at the hospital: diapers, baby clothes, linens, and laundry supplies.

Tickets to the gala are $75 and come with dinner and unlimited beverages.
