Phyllis Ain, the WSR’s reading resource teacher and Sudi Napalan, SSHS Teacher Librarian, are collaborating in a literacy project that encourages students to read for pleasure. Over 100 paperback books are loaned by SSHS library to the 6th grade classes for this project.
SSHS students creatively introduced the featured literature using different strategies such as reading aloud, book talks, skits and lively discussions.
Yuri Song, a junior SSHS student, said: “It was relieving to see the younger kids interested in reading ‘Beastly.’ I believe that today really provided a great opportunity to promote reading.”
Napalan added, “It is important to provide interesting and current reading materials to entice students to read, especially the reluctant readers. It is important for our Book Club and SSHS students to mentor the younger students. It benefits both sides. SSHS students want to make an impact in the community and this is one of their ways.”
In February, SSHS Library initiated a movie tie-in literacy project for the book “Beastly” by Alex Flinn. More than 300 SSHS students read the book and students continue to rave about the book to their peers.
SSHS Library Art Show
This year’s theme for school library month is “Create Your Own Story.” This year, SSHS Library and SSHS fine arts department are collaborating to display books and artwork that relates to the theme.
Members of the community are invited to visit SSHS Library and admire the students’ talents.
