Chamber executive director Kyle Calabrese told the Variety yesterday that the Student Career Exploration Day will be on Dec. 2 but the deadline for submission of applications will be on Nov. 13.
Calabrese said that in the past three years, over a hundred students have participated in the program.
He said the program involves getting the students to spend a day “shadowing” employees at private-sector businesses.
He said that the program aims to increase high school students’ awareness of career opportunities in the private sector.
“The students will be asked to fill up a questionnaire listing their personal interests and experiences, and the chamber will match them with the private businesses who have signed up or are members of the chamber,” Calabrese said.
“We will see to it that the students will get experience on businesses that mirror their interests,” he said.
At the end of the career day, Calabrese said that the students and the employers will be asked to fill up questionnaires again to check on how the program went.
“The responses of both students and employers in the past years were positive. The students have learned a lot about private sector opportunities and the students are given the chance to think what kind of jobs they will land after studying,” he said.
The private business the students can choose from include tourism/travel industry, marketing, sales, shipping, accounting, automotive, banking and finance, media/communications, computer services, construction, hotel, engineers/architects, customer service/call center, insurance, Law (very limited availability), graphic arts, restaurant/entertainment and small business entrepreneurship.
Calabrese said that more private businesses are signing up with the chamber.
Students will join the chamber general membership meeting.
Forms can be downloaded from the chamber Web site, www.saipanchamber.com.
Calabrese said the applicants must fill up the three forms which include the questionnaire, a parents’ consent form and a school consent form. Call 233-7150 for more information
