Susupe Neighborhood Watch Task Force lines up activities

By April, its members will start revitalizing their village through sports and a community cleanup campaign.

Eric Atalig, the task force block captain in Susupe, said they will also create an emergency community response team.

The sports events, he said, have been ongoing but they plan to expand them by organizing a league.

During weekends, basketball players conduct  a cleanup, he added.

“We need to have more participants to do something good for the village,” Atalig said.

The cleanup drive  includes the repainting of the sidewalk gutter, the removal of graffiti and patrolling within the community.

Their program, he said involves the creation of a club for the youth and adults alike who want to perform community services.

During their meeting on Wednesday, Atalig encouraged community members to know their neighbors so they can establish trust.

Eventually, he said, each neighbor will watch over his or her neighbor’s house.

If there’s a suspicious person in the village they will immediately report it to the authority.

On Wednesday the task force elected its officers:

Atalig, president; Rogelio Gonzales, vice president; Ezra Caro, secretary; Fer David, treasurer; and Jermin Jose, sergeant at arms.

Former Lt. Gov. Jesus C. Borja is their adviser and legal counsel.

Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council Chairman Ramon B. Camacho said he was “very impressed” with Borja’s participation.

Camacho said the community should not always be dependent on the Department of Public Safety in maintaining peace and order in the villages.

“The police cannot be in every area. We need to contribute something to the community and stop relying on the police,” he added.

The task force, he said, will become stronger if every community member plays a very active role in its activities.
