Tabulation of Youth Congress votes begins

Seven schools participated in the election: Grace Christian Academy, Kagman High School, Rota High School, Saipan Southern High School and Tinian Jr./Sr. High School.

In an interview, Legislative Bureau Director Glenna P. Reyes said there were nine candidates: Angela Faith M. Mamaril from Grace Christian Academy; Mercedes M. Mesa from Kagman High School; Jessica Im Lee and Manatsu E. Omori from Marianas Baptist Academy; Audrey Joy Ada from Marianas High School; Thomas H. Barcinas from Rota High School; Shelane DLC. Borja from Saipan Southern High School; and Marquina M. Hofschneider from Tinian Jr./Sr. High School.

Each school will elect one youth senator.

The results will be verified by the school principals and then forwarded to the Floor Leader of the House of Representatives for certification within three days after the election.

The certified results will then be forwarded to the governor, the commissioner of education, the school principals and the presiding officers of the Legislature.

As of press time last night, there was still no information regarding the voter turnout.

The elected youth senators can propose  measures to address and raise awareness on youth issues, said Reyes.

The election used to be held every year but those elected this year will serve for two years.

“The candidates must be, at the most, a junior so he or she may be able to run the two-year term while they are still in high school,” said Reyes.

If a member graduates from high school, he or she may still continue to serve the balance of his term.

Reyes said the official results will not be out until Thursday but they are already preparing for the inauguration.

“The inaugural activities will be held on the 16th of April at ten o’clock in the morning in the House of Representative chamber,” she added.
