Teachers urged to accelerate reading program

During a recent professional development workshop for public school teachers,  Associate Education Commissioner for Curriculum and Instruction Jackie Quitugua said students were doing well in reading.

But, she added, the Public School System  must “need to work on the oral language by accelerating the reading program.”

Kagman Elementary School principal Ignacia T. Demapan said this coming school year, they will help students, particularly those in the junior grade levels, meet reading standards.

“We will start the new school year with the junior class that has not met the reading level, and we will help them to be successful in the next grade level. That’s one new thing we have to make available to help our students,” she said.

The workshop at the Pacific Islands Club was attended by teachers from Kagman, William S. Reyes and Koblerville Elementary Schools.

In an interview, Demapan said the purpose of the workshop was to discuss overall data, especially in reading, math and the Chamorro and Carolinian Language Heritage Studies Program.

She said they also presented their action plan on different learning content areas.

“We want to start right and prepare everyone on what we need to do in order for us to help our students extensively so we can bring up their scores,” she said.

The workshop is an annual event conducted after the end of the school year, Demapan said.

“This will help us evaluate the teaching and learning system in school.”

Every year, she added, there’s always great challenges in school.

Quitugua encouraged teachers to be more patients and to work harder, saying the results of their perseverance may not be seen immediately but they will always harvest  “good fruits.”
