Trivia Tuesdays is an event held every week from 7:30 to about 9:30 at the Wild Bill’s Restaurant located in Garapan.
It is a night filled with random, interesting trivia questions and it is open to the entire community, free of charge.
Teams compete for glory and gift certificates from Wild Bill’s.
“We come often,” says Celina Biado in regards to the large ensemble she came along with. “It’s something new to do and it stimulates our minds, we really feel challenged.”
“Also, we don’t like to lose,” she adds.
Shawn Fleming, student at NMC says he attends, “Because it’s a good way to bond with friends and it’s a lot of fun.”
“I come to support my friends, cheer them on, and eat good food,” says 19 year old Ruben Silvestre.
Rhine Reyes, a part of Biado’s crew shares his thoughts on the event: “It’s a good, productive thing for the youth to partake in. It’s a great way to spend your time.”
“It’s fun,” exclaims an enthusiastic Erika Estrada.
“You get to learn new things you didn’t know before. Also, you get to socialize with your friends while you’re at it.”
The night is organized by the Saipan Trivia Tuesday Troupe founded by Daniel Stafford, Brian O’laughlin, Glen Hunter, and Jordan Davis.
The four gentlemen share the responsibility of coming up with questions for the night, advertising the event, and making sure everything goes smoothly.
“It’s a night done as a fundraising effort,” explains Hunter. “That’s actually our main purpose: we’re trying to raise funds for the Commonwealth Cancer Association.”
When asked what they would say to encourage more members of the community to attend, the founders replied: “It’s free to join and it’s good fun with a family friendly environment. It’s a stimulating experience for your mind. There’s lots of prizes and great food. Also, it’s for a great cause.”
“There’s not a lot to do on a Tuesday night so it’s something to fill a down night,” says Hunter.
“We have a very diverse crowd,” he refers to the variety in age and nationality. The age range in participants that night was around the ages of 15-65.
“It’s a nice cross span of Saipan’s true population,” he adds.
This last Tuesday night was a first: Special Movie Trivia Night. All questions pertained to movie titles, directors, actors, and random facts about the films.
The quizmaster for the night was Jim Benedetto.
Tina Sablan, program manager of the Commonwealth Cancer Association, further discusses the Saipan Trivia Tuesday Troupe’s collaboration with the CCA.
“Marianas March Against Cancer is our main fundraiser for the year,” she says in regards to CCA.
“But last year we decided to try to have more events throughout the year to have more consistent ways of raising revenue. We heard about the Saipan Trivia Tuesday Troupe and how they were looking for a cause so we asked if we could be it.”
Throughout Trivia Tuesdays, the CCA sells $1 raffle tickets to raise funds throughout the night.
“We solicit from the community for prizes,” says Sablan. “So far it’s been very successful. We’ve consistently raised between $300-500 a month and we started last November.”
She points out how “$500 is enough to cover one cancer client’s financial assistance for an entire year.”
She also mentions how Wild Bill’s has been amazingly cooperative and supportive.
Everyone is welcome to head over to Trivia Tuesdays for a night of fun, so don’t be shy and try it out!
