Three hotel guests lose valuables to burglars

Department of Public Safety acting spokesman Jason T. Tarkong said the two burglary and theft incidents which occurred at the Grand Saipan Hotel in Susupe were reported on July 21.

Tarkong said responding police officers met the hotel staff and the victims—a Japanese couple who reported that their personal things were stolen from their room during the night.

The couple told police that they went to sleep at around midnight on Monday.

They said they locked the front door but left the sliding glass door to the balcony unlocked.

When they awoke after 6 a.m. on Tuesday, they discovered the sliding glass door to the balcony halfway open and two of their bags were missing.

Tarkong said the Japanese couple lost two credit cards, a Sanyo video camera, Y10,000 $120.00 US, and $4,000.00 worth of US travelers’ checks, along with their passports.

Tarkong said that there were no signs of forced entry but police noticed an access to the balcony from adjacent rooms and the rooftop leading to the bottom floor.

At about 4 p.m. on the same day, police officers responded to another burglary and theft incident at the same hotel. Tarkong said police met the 45-year-old Korean male and learned that someone had stolen some items from his hotel room the day before.

Tarkong said that the victim left his hotel room at about 10:00 a.m. on Monday to go sight seeing. When he returned at about 4:00 p.m. that afternoon he discovered his personal items missing.

The Korean victim lost one gold-colored Samsung cell phone one Samsung digital camera, and two gold rings.

Tarkong said that like the first burglary case, there were no signs of forced entry.

Once again, DPS is calling on the community for assistance to report if they have any information about this crime to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 234-7272.

A reward of up to $1,000 will be given to tipsters with information that would lead to an arrest. Caller ID is not used and all calls remain anonymous.
