Tinian scholars get $43K

Introduced by Rep. Trenton B. Conner, R-Tinian, House Local Bill 17-22 which now becomes Tinian Local Law 17-3, appropriates $24,000 from pachinko slot machine and poker machine collections.

The law also re-appropriates the $19,000 that was originally allotted for a different item by the previous Legislature.

In an interview, Conner said the Tinian leadership anticipates an increase in the number of qualified students who want to pursue higher education.

He said close to 60 high school students on Tinian graduated this year.

The Tinian leadership wants each incoming college freshmen to get $1,000 per semester.

Conner  said he and his fellow Tinian lawmakers want to make sure the students get the funds prior to the opening of the semester in September.

The new law names the Tinian Municipal Scholarship Board as the expenditure authority of the fund. In the past, the Tinian mayor’s office can disburse the funds.

Conner said he will soon propose another appropriation for Tinian students for the next semester, along with an appropriation for medical assistance.

Senate Vice President Jude U. Hofschneider, the  Republican chairman of the Tinian legislative delegation, said despite the tough economic times, the Tinian leadership remains committed to the  education of the youth.
