The purpose of Jackson’s visit is to begin work on collecting all legislation and policies relating to tobacco in the state of Yap and other pertinent information relating to tobacco issues which will be used for a national policy review to be conducted in Pohnpei in the near future.
Jackson will conduct the same assessment in the other FSM states.
This initiative is one of several initiatives that came out of the FSM national comprehensive cancer control meeting held in Kosrae in Dec. 2009 to address the continuum of cancer care which includes review of all state policies relating to tobacco in terms of access, sales, distribution, import, consumption and so forth.
Jackson visit is being coordinated by the Yap Cancer Society Program.
Jackson will meet with key officials from the Department of Health Services, the Attorney General’s Office, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health program, the Yap Cancer Coalition and members of the Yap State Legislature.
The Federated States of Micronesia is a signatory to the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention and is bound to take action to further promote the provisions in that framework, which look at ways to prevent or reduce the impacts of tobacco on human health.
