Torres asks Kilili’s help in nuclear power project

Torres, Ind.-Saipan, authored Public Law 17-10 which allows for a “passive” small modular nuclear reactors in the commonwealth.

The next move is to obtain federal funding to finally make it happen, Torres told Sablan in a letter.

He asked Sablan to request up to $950,000 in technical assistant grant from the U.S. Department of Energy for a study of nuclear power generation.

In an interview last week, Torres said Sablan  promised to help secure federal funds for the study.

Sablan, in his letter to Torres, said  finding such funding may take some time but the “work” on the request has begun.

Torres said he has been communicating with  Hyperion Power Generation, a firm based in Los Alamos, New Mexico, that runs a cooperative research and development agreement to develop mini-power reactors.

Hyperion, he said, has partnered with Chamberlain Group that provides study on export regulations, permitting and licensing nuclear technology, operator expertise and training, balance of plant and performance description, safety plan, security plan, pricing details, scheduling, risk management and overall site planning requirement in support of Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing requirements.
