Torres still wants NMC to disclose settlement documents

He said he is “confident” that the new president will cooperate with the Legislature.

When Dr. Carmen Fernandez was still the NMC president, Torres repeatedly asked for documents regarding claims against the college,  including the amount paid or agreed to be paid by the college in settlement of each claim and sources of the funding paid or to be paid in settlement of all such claims.

“The past president was defiant because her cohorts on the board of regents were still in the majority,” said Torres, Ind.-Saipan.

He said he was not asking NMC for any personnel data.

He doesn’t see any problems with the current NMC board if its members “will remain transparent and honest.”

Fernandez refused to grant Torres’ his request, saying “it will violate the confidentiality of agreement of  NMC.”

Fernandez argued that the Open Government Act requires public agencies to make public records available for inspection “but does not require agencies to create such documents.”
